1. Upgrading Wave on your primary and secondary Waves

This section outlines the best steps for conducting a seamless Wave software upgrade on both the primary and secondary Waves. Business continuity will not be available during a software upgrade—the two systems will be at different software builds and a backup/restore will fail.

Important!  Schedule software upgrades during a service window—during the upgrade there will be a window of data that will not be captured.

To upgrade Wave on your primary and secondary Waves

1 On the primary Wave, trigger a system backup to occur immediately. To do so, on the Business Continuity tab in General Settings, click Run Backup to secondary now.
2 Leave the primary Wave running to handle calls.
3 Upgrade the secondary Wave. It should stay in secondary mode when the upgrade is complete. Verify that this is true in the Business Continuity tab on the secondary Wave.

Note:  If there is a problem with the upgrade, do not failover to the secondary Wave. Continue using the primary Wave while you diagnose the failure on the secondary Wave. Verify that the secondary Wave rolled back to the same software version as the primary Wave, and try the upgrade again after the cause of the failure has been corrected.

4 Failover to the secondary Wave. When the upgrade succeeds on the secondary Wave, disconnect the primary Wave from the network and enable failover on the secondary Wave. Phone operation will switch automatically to the secondary Wave. ViewPoint Desktop and ViewPoint Mobile clients will connect to the secondary Wave and upgrade to support the new software version if needed.
5 Perform the same software upgrade on the primary Wave, leaving the secondary Wave to handle calls.
6 Disable business continuity and identify the primary and secondary Waves. Do one of the following:
Leave the secondary Wave in place as the new primary Wave (it is now handling calls as the current failover system), and reset the old primary Wave to become the new secondary Wave. This is the preferred scenario and will minimize any data loss.

Follow the steps in Leaving the secondary Wave in place.

Return the old primary Wave into service as the new primary Wave.

Follow the steps in Switching back to the primary Wave.
